The first paragraph of KCA DEUTAG’s Health and Safety Policy sums up our firm belief that an incident and accident free environment is possible, every day, 365 days a year, in all our activities worldwide. This belief informs the way that we plan and manage our operations and activities, leading towards our vision of success: Safe, Effective and Trouble-free operations.

Safe
This is the greatest part of our vision. Our first priority is having incident -free operations, where nobody gets hurt, and we don’t harm the environment. It’s as simple as that. We take action to remove or reduce the chances of someone getting hurt.

Effective
Performance improvement is part of our culture. We seek to know how we can get better and better at what we do, and we act on that knowledge. We make sure that we learn and we improve. We learn from our successes so that we can repeat them. We learn from our mistakes so we can avoid them in future. We get safer.

Trouble-free
Our leaders make sure that there is a plan and make sure that things go to plan; the right people, the right equipment, and the right materials are in the right place at the right time. If we do it right then we do it safely. There should be no surprises on a KCA DEUTAG operation.

Having set our vision based on our Health and Safety Policy, we believe that our employees have a right to an incident- and accident-free environment, and that they themselves have responsibilities in creating and maintaining such an environment.

We therefore provide our personnel with industry-leading health and safety, leadership, and skills training. We set firm standards for each team and operation to live up to. We provide a practical, user-friendly HSEQ ‘toolkit’ that our people use to ensure that protection of health, safety and the environment is an integral part of day-to-day operations management.

In 2005 KCA DEUTAG established a new behavioural training programme called Safe2Lead, which is recognised as a world-class initiative in the industry and continues to be the focus of our efforts to improve performance.

The programme cost $700,000 to develop and since 2005 over 1500 personnel from 21 different geographical operational locations completed the programme. Safe2Lead is now available in English, German, Arabic and Spanish and has been run in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Far East and Central America.

A comparison of KCA DEUTAG against the benchmark of the International Association of Drilling Contractors indicates the success our HSEQ efforts have had in recent years. However, without the continued commitment of management and our employees, HSEQ performance can easily deteriorate -therefore HSEQ improvement will always be an area of the highest priority throughout our operations worldwide.
