For individuals that are new to the offshore industry, the starting position is a Roustabout. A Roustabout is responsible for carrying out general housekeeping and material handling operations for the drilling rig and, where appropriate, the platform.

Until sufficient experience and competence has been gained in the role, the individual will be classified as a ‘Greenhand’. This term is used to ensure that new entrants are placed with experienced crews who can mentor the individual.

Greenhand intakes usually occur about three to four times per calendar year, as and when required by operations.

Essential requirements

  • Must have reached the legal age of 18 to work offshore
  • Must be eligible to work in the UK
  • Hold a valid passport
  • Hold a valid BOSIET certificate (Basic Offshore Safety Induction & Emergency Training)

Desirable requirements

Preference will be given to candidates already holding Greenhand Certification. This is a five-day course run by various training providers which covers such topics as Introduction to Drilling Operations, Working Safely, Manual Handling, COSHH, Working at Heights, Helicopter & Helideck Safety and Banksman and Slinging. This course helps candidates gain an awareness of the lifestyle and duties associated with working offshore.

Recruitment process

Candidates will be interviewed by a Rig Manager and a member of the HR department, and undertake a short multiple-choice questionnaire.
Certification will be checked at interview.

Two satisfactory references will be required for successful candidates.

Any offer of employment is conditional on the individual passing a pre-employment medical including drug screening.

All successful candidates must be able to attend the KCA DEUTAG two-day immersion training course prior to mobilising offshore.

Important Information

Please note that meeting all of the above requirements does not guarantee an interview. There are a huge number of applicants and limited opportunities for Greenhands and therefore not all applications will be progressed.

International Opportunities

Unfortunately, we do not have opportunities for new starts to the industry internationally as these positions are hired locally by each Country Management team.
