RDS, the rig engineering design specialists and division of the international drilling contractor KCA DEUTAG, has been awarded several contracts worth more than £30 million during the first half of 2010. Alongside several concept selection and front end studies, RDS has won major projects for a number of international oil companies.

Among these major projects, RDS is pleased to announce the approval from the Clair Ridge Joint Venture to commence the next phase of the engineering for the Clair Ridge drilling facilities. This phase runs through to Q1 2011 and will employ over 40 people at the project offices. This follows the recently announced detail design drilling facilities contract which sees RDS supporting the Chirag Oil Project (COP) “Execute” phase as awarded by the Azerbaijan International Operating Company (AIOC). A third contract award, from another major IOC, covers detail engineering on a platform rig refurbishment in the Norwegian sector which will continue until the beginning of 2012.

Headquartered in Aberdeen, RDS’ core business is to deliver a comprehensive engineering service for new-build drilling facilities, rig reactivation and modifications, conceptual engineering and consultancy, and technical integrity assurance for drilling systems and equipment. The company has 500 engineering and project support personnel based in 7 global offices in Aberdeen, Baku, Bergen, Houston, London, Stavanger and Teesside.

Hamish Ritchie, RDS General Manager said, “These contract awards build on 30 years of worldwide rig design and project experience.  RDS’ extensive skills base, together with our ‘wells up’ design philosophy provide our clients with rig engineering solutions that are technically and commercially robust.  This engineering excellence is coupled with in-house drilling operations expertise to ensure rigs designed and commissioned for safe, effective, trouble-free drilling operations”.

The above commercial developments represent a strong foundation for future growth. Going forward, and while retaining its core engineering capability in the UK, Norway and the Caspian region, RDS intends to strengthen its Houston office and focus on other markets in South America and Asia.
