Russia is a key growth area for KCA DEUTAG in which we have been successfully developing our drilling operations and continuing the enlargement of our rig fleet since 2002.
Our successful drilling activities over the last six years have enabled us to develop strong relationships with clients including Sibneft, Schlumberger, RITEK, Achimgaz, TNK-BP, Salym Petroleum Development N.V., Burgaz and Arcticgas (Gazprom/Eni).
KCA DEUTAG’s commitment to high standards of operational performance is underpinned by a focus on safety – the safety and well being of our personnel as well as operational safety.
KCA DEUTAG has robust safety, quality, and business management systems in place and continues to develop technical excellence across our operations. We continually work to improve the safety awareness and competence of our people through training and development as to maintain high standards and efficiency.
KCA DEUTAG works closely with the Russian oil and gas universities in Moscow and Tyumen to attract the best new talent in our industry.
KCA DEUTAG uses state-of-the-art equipment and technologies, operating with one of the most modern, up-to-date rig fleets in Russia. With best-in-class drilling services based on its extensive expertise KCA DEUTAG has experience in drilling all types of deviated wells, horizontal oil wells and deep gas wells.
Siberia
Western Siberia remains the primary operational area for KCA DEUTAG in Russia. Our regional head office is located right in the heart of Siberia in the city of Tyumen. From here all 10 rig operations are managed and supported against the challenges of harsh Arctic winters and the remoteness of operations.
Following a spud in 2005, our operations for Salym Petroleum Development N.V., (a 50-50 joint venture between Shell and OAO Evikhon) in Salym, West Siberia, continue successfully. This operation was recently honoured with the award of Shell’s Ferrari Trophy for delivering world class performance. Rigs T-390 and T-391 are on contract until the summer of 2009. They were joined in 2007 by the new build 3900-series rig T-392 constructed by Uralmash.
During 2007 we also mobilised four new HR-5000 rigs – the T-501, T-502, T-503 and T-504 – to the Demianskiy field for TNK-BP project. All four rigs are operating under a four-year operating and maintenance contract.
Our 2 other HR-5000 rigs, which have been specifically built for the harsh Siberian climate, are successfully operating for a number of projects in Novy Urengoy. Rig T-500 is in use for a project with Burgaz, Gazprom’s drilling subsidiary. Rig T-505 operates for Arcticgas (ENI/Gazprom).
KCA DEUTAG has also demonstrated a continuous presence in Eastern Siberia with its heaviest, and state-of-the-art, rig in Russia – T-2000 for OAO Verkhnechonskneftegaz (TNK-BP/Rosneft).

Sakhalin In 2003, KCA DEUTAG was awarded a seven year contract by Sakhalin Energy Investment Company (SEIC) relating to the development of Sakhalin II Phase 2 Development, offshore Sakhalin, far eastern Russia.

The contract is for platform drilling services on the Molikpaq platform, which commenced in early 2004 following an extensive rig 'make ready' programme, together with platform drilling services on the Lunskoye-A and Piltun-B platforms, which commenced drilling operations in 2007 and 2008. In addition, KCA DEUTAG was responsible for supplying engineering, drilling operations and construction support services during the construction of the Lunskoye and Piltun drilling facilities.
In 2006, we set up a training school in Sakhalin in co-operation with Shell, using our DART drilling simulator, to recruit, train and employ a local workforce.
In 2007, KCA DEUTAG successfully completed two water injection wells for SEIC at its Onshore Production Facility (OPF) site on the eastern coast of Sakhalin Island, 70 kilometres from Nogliki.
