Meet Allan Wilson, Rig Manager, West Azeri
29 October 2024
Allan Wilson’s love of speed doesn’t stop with his hobby of motorcycle racing. He’s completely committed to the fast pace of our ever-evolving industry. And with a thirty-year tenure, he’s seen how change, technology and innovation can be key to the future of drilling and the energy industry.
“I began my journey with the company in 1994 as a roustabout on the Brent Alpha platform in the North Sea. Over the years, I’ve taken on various roles and had the chance to work internationally. Currently, I’m the rig manager for the West Azeri platform in Baku, Azerbaijan.” Allan says.
“Day to day I make sure the rig operates efficiently and safely while meeting targets, maintaining high production standards and minimizing downtime. I manage the rig crew, coordinate with the customer, maintain equipment and ensure safety protocols are understood and followed. I also handle administrative tasks like investigations, scheduling, and reporting.
“My favourite part of the role is leading my team and celebrating their successes. It fills me with great pride. But I also enjoy contributing to our wider industry and seeing what tomorrow holds.”
A career spanning thirty years of progress
“Working in the energy industry has always been incredibly fulfilling for me because it plays a crucial role in powering our world and driving progress. And I’m motivated by the opportunity to contribute to innovative solutions that address our global energy needs,” Allan explains.
“Back in the '90s, I couldn’t have imagined just how far our industry would progress. I’ve witnessed significant shifts towards more advanced technologies, including the development of new drilling techniques, enhanced oil recovery methods, and the integration of digital technologies for improved data management and operational efficiency.”
“I’ve also witnessed the growing emphasis on sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of energy production, including the implementation of stricter regulations and cleaner practices.”
But Allan knows we’re still on a journey.
“Looking ahead, I believe the future of the energy industry will continue to be defined by technology and an even stronger emphasis on sustainability. The focus will be on creating a resilient, secure and efficient energy mix that can meet growing global demand while minimizing environmental impact,” he says.
“And to achieve this, we’ll need to collaborate across industries, governments, and communities combining multiple strategies like diversification of energy sources, innovation and technology, policy and regulation, energy efficiency, public-private partnerships and education and awareness.”
Tomorrow’s workforce starts today
Allan is optimistic about the future and believes our industry is paving the way for a more sustainable energy landscape that benefits both current and future generations.
“The dynamic nature of our industry, with its constant advancements and challenges, keeps me engaged and enthusiastic,” Allan says.
“Starting a career in the energy industry today means being part of a sector that has a significant impact on the economy, environment, and society. It’s an exciting and meaningful path with plenty of opportunities for growth and innovation. I’d say if you’re thinking about joining, do it.
“And who knows, you might stick around as long as I have to witness what the next 30 years will hold.”
