Meet Abbas AlOgaili, Rig Manager, Saudi Arabia

16 December 2024

Abbas AlOgaili is one of our rig managers in Saudi Arabia. Upon leaving high school he quickly followed in his brother’s footsteps, joining a competitor in the drilling industry where he learned the ropes for just over a year, before a key move to KCA Deutag in 2001.

It was then his journey really began, progressing through the ranks from floor hand, to derrickman, assistant driller, driller, tool pusher, drilling supervisor and latterly rig manager, working in the field looking after four rigs.

Hard work, ambition and a drive to succeed are vital for progression, according to Abbas.

“In the early days I gradually built up my skills by carrying a tally book where I started writing down the names of equipment, drawing the kit and collecting previous plans, reading them to understand the detail and operational aspects,” explained Abbas.

“For those willing to learn and work hard the company is very supportive and is open to the ongoing development of local employees through mentoring and formal training. In my role I closely monitor safety, equipment, site visits and act as a company representative when visiting customers.”

Abbas’ attitude and dedication are a fantastic example of our WE CARE core values action, specifically Customer Centricity and Excellence.

We’re committed to Caring for our People, recognising and promoting them for a job well done. Investing in the countries where we live and work is a key part of our sustainability strategy. We have a long and proven track record of developing and empowering our local leadership teams to provide in-country value and we look forward to continuing this approach in Saudi Arabia.

With a focus on quality at every turn, Abbas is looking forward to progressing his career even further.

So, how can other aspiring drilling supervisors follow in Abbas’ footsteps?

“My advice would be to work hard, focus on doing the right thing and always put safety first.” added Abbas.
