Meet Raliatu Usman-Aririsukwu, Senior HSSE Advisor, Aberdeen

Raliatu understands the importance of a balanced lifestyle that includes relaxation and personal growth. And when she’s not working at our Aberdeen HQ helping our teams stay safe and drive to zero incidents on site and in our offices, she can be found spending time with her friends and family.

“My career journey started with a keen interest in workplace safety and has evolved through a series of hands-on roles in a high-risk industry,” Raliatu says.

“I’ve seen firsthand how having the correct safety protocols can make the difference between a smooth operation and a serious incident. And throughout my career I’ve learnt the value of continuous learning, training, and proactive safety management.” 

“I joined the company a few years ago as an HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) Advisor I focus on creating and implementing safety policies, conducting risk assessments, and enforcing a safety culture that protects our workforce, the environment, and the communities where we work,” she explains.

“By helping prevent incidents and mitigate risks, I play a part in reducing downtime, avoiding costly disruptions, and ensuring compliance with local and international safety standards. This, in turn, improves our operations' overall efficiency and reliability.”

Commitment to health and safety excellence

Raliatu believes a proactive approach to health and safety is crucial in maintaining a secure and efficient workplace.

“I’ve learned that health and safety isn’t just about compliance. It’s about creating a mindset of shared responsibility, where every individual feels empowered to act in the interest of their safety and that of their colleagues. This philosophy has shaped my approach to fostering a proactive safety culture, where continuous improvement and vigilance are integral to our daily operations,” she says.  

“The work my team does contributes to our whole company’s drive toward excellence in safety performance. And our global presence and diverse operations across various regions with challenging environments presents an exciting opportunity to expand my expertise.”

“What I enjoy most though, is the opportunity to make a tangible impact on people’s well-being. Knowing that the systems and processes I help put in place can prevent injuries and protect lives is incredibly rewarding. And it’s fulfilling to see how even small changes in behaviour or procedure can make significant improvements.” 

Keeping safe in a transforming industry

“The energy industry is dynamic and essential, with global implications for economies, communities, and everyday life. Contributing to the safety and wellbeing of those working in such high-risk environments is both a challenge and a privilege.” 

“Right now, we’re at a pivotal moment, with the global energy transition heading towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources gaining momentum. This is pushing the industry to evolve, blending traditional energy production methods with renewable alternatives.”

She’s dedicated to ensuring that safety standards keep pace with these changes, to protect not only workers but the environment too.

“As a health and safety professional, the energy transition highlights the need for enhanced safety standards, especially as new technologies and methods are introduced. We’ll need to adapt by integrating new practices, improving operational efficiencies, and embracing innovation to reduce the environmental impact of energy extraction and production.”  

“But I think the evolving landscape holds exciting potential for those who are proactive, adaptable, and committed to our future. And in the realm of HSE, this means continuously improving our safety practices, embracing change, and always putting health and safety at the forefront of everything we do.”
